Interesting fact: Ski bench
Ski jumping has always been a popular sport in Špindlerův Mlýn. The first bridge was built by enthusiasts of this winter sport in 1905 on a meadow below the Esplanade Hotel, today's Sněžka Hotel. In 1936, the remarkable Masaryk Bridge at the Girls' Bridge was built according to a design by architect Jarolímek. In the 1930s, it was the largest bridge in the Czech Republic. In the first competitions, the Japanese athlete Iguro jumped 81 meters on it. The finish line over the Elbe River was interestingly solved on a wooden bridge. Unfortunately, it gradually became devastated in the 1950s. As a tribute to all the brave ski jumpers, the Špindlerův Mlýn Skiers' Association built the Ski Bench in 2015 on the site of the original Masaryk Bridge. It serves not only as a place to rest, but also as an occasional place for cultural events. If you sit on the bench, you will see the remains of this structure at the foot of the opposite slope. Other ski jumps were built in Svatý Petr. The first one was there in 1906, it was enlarged in 1940, and in 1954 the entire ski jumping area with four ski jumps P16, P28, P50 and P72 was built. In the 1980s the ski jumps were demolished, ending the era of ski jumping in our city.
