City center – White Bridge and angel wings

The iconic White Bridge in Špindlerův Mlýn has been standing for over 100 years. In the city center, it is complemented by angel wings – a popular place for photos with a view of the Elbe Cascades and the start of the Harrachov Trail.
intro

History

After the devastating floods of July 1897, the riverbed was modified and continued from 1899 to 1913. As part of these changes, a reinforced concrete bridge, 27.6 m long, 4.84 m wide and 3.65 m high, was built over the Elbe River. More than a century after its construction, it remains one of the main landmarks of the city and is known to no one as anything other than the White Bridge.

Architectural mls

The new bridge was built in 1911 using a then-innovative method of reinforced concrete construction. The method was patented by Franz Visintini and its revolutionary nature lay in the complete prefabrication of the supporting structure. The already finished, so-called Visintini girders were transported to the construction site and simply assembled there.
This system is no longer used today and has been forgotten; there are only a few surviving examples of this then revolutionary patent in the world.

Interesting facts

The White Bridge in Špindlerův Mlýn has also appeared in several films, for example, Vojtěch Kotek walks over it in the film Snowboarders, Špindl 2, shot with Krakonoš, Homolka and Tobolka or the film Blizzard, Uphill, Run!

The access road to Špindlerův Mlýn (II/295) also ends in the city center. From there, only a mountain road leads to Špindlerová bouda, which was previously only a mountain trail.

Angel wings

The center of this popular mountain resort in the Czech Republic has a beautiful center with a city park and a relaxation area overlooking the Elbe cascades. Be sure to stop here for an original photo by the angel wings, which are a symbol of the protection of this exceptional place overlooking the iconic White Bridge. Right here is the start of the Harrachovy path, the oldest hiking trail leading to the Elbe mine.

Harrach's path

Harrach's Way or Harrachov's Way is the oldest hiking trail in the Giant Mountains. The section leading through the Elbe valley from the White Bridge in Špindlerův Mlýn to the Labská bouda was built by Count Jan Harrach in 1879. The path is therefore older than the bridge itself. The length of this section is 8.7 km and the elevation is 520 m. In winter, the section from Pudlava to the Labská bouda is closed due to the avalanche danger.

The markings on the road were Czech and German and its purpose was to connect the town of Harrachov with Labský důl and Špindlerův Mlýn.

Interesting fact:

At that time, people had to pay 2 kreuzers to use the road.

  • 1 gold coin = 60 kreuzers
  • 1 egg = 1.5 kreuzer
  • about 2 kreujcars = 2 eggs
