Silent testimony of tragedy

Just about 220 meters away from the main route of the Mlynářovy stezka (Miller's Trail) there is a place that commemorates a tragic event from the history of the Krkonoše Mountains - a plane crash that occurred in these places.
The path to the memorial site is marked by a signpost and after a short climb you will reach a cross , which was erected here in memory of the victims of the accident. In the vicinity, you can still find the remains of the plane wreckage, which silently testify to the drama that took place here.

The atmosphere of the place invites pause, quiet reflection and respect for those who lost their lives here. It is one of the subtle but powerful reminders of the human stories associated with this mountainous region.

Coat of arms of the Podgórzyn municipality – mouflon

Did you know that the symbol of the village of Podgórzyn is the mouflon ? This sturdy even-toed ungulate is one of the smallest species of wild sheep and is considered the ancestor of today's domestic sheep .

It was brought to the Krkonoše Mountains in 1912 and 1913 by Count Schaffgotsch , to the area of Jagniątków, Zachełmia and Przesieki.
Male mouflons, called tryci , grow up to 130 cm long and measure around 88 cm at the withers. Their typical feature is their spirally coiled horns , which resemble shells. Females are smaller, growing to around 100–110 cm and, unlike the males, do not have prominent horns.

Today, mouflons are a common part of the mountain fauna of the Krkonoše Mountains and an icon of the region – you can even find them in the emblem of the municipality.

From the history of the village and nature

The mountainous landscape of the Krkonoše Mountains hides many layers – not only natural, but also cultural and historical. The asphalt section of the road you walked on is not an ordinary forest road. It belongs to the Sudecká cesta , originally planned as a mountain road of strategic importance. Its story continues at other points of the Mlynářov stezka.

The landscape around this place is not only naturally valuable – it is also home to several typical animals that are connected to the identity of the region.
